We have a requirement for desiccants to act as a means of water vapour removal from a new range of food production equipment. The systems will be cyclic and will be required to remove typically 650 kg/hr of water vapour over a pressure, ( vacuum ), range of 1000 to 12 mbar. Each evaporation will be carried out over a vacuum extraction period of 62 seconds and the associated temperatures will be from 100 to 10 Centigrade, i.e. the desiccant will be acting as a form of vacuum pump for condensable vapour. The desiccant is required to be thermally regenerated and the basic design is for two vacuum vessels in parallel with one vessel being subjected to the vacuum phase when the second is being regenerated. The vapour load per cycle is typically 45 kg. and regeneration would be under atmospheric pressure at a suitable temperature with the gases generated being vented to atmosphere. We would ask that you specify materials, volumes and regenerative temperatures and flow rates with special regard to the fact that food safety standards must be respected. The vessels will be supplied by the client to our design which would be in conjunction with yourselves. The process is currently used 24 hours/day and seven days/week. This application is required to replace existing systems which do NOT use a desiccant system but use a thermal hot water application. The sketch shown below shows how a mixture of air and water vapour is taken from a process chamber by the use of a vacuum pumping system. The mechanical vacuum pump removes the air only and the water vapour produced when the vacuum is applied is to be handled by your desiccant. The vacuum chamber contains foodstuff which enters and exits the chamber 15 times per hour and the vacuum is applied for 62 seconds during each of these cycles. The water vapour load is approximately 45 kg./cycle. The temperature of the vapour will be 98 Centigrade at the start of the cycle but will fall to approximately 10 Centigrade at the end of the cycle. The vapour streams will be fed alternately through the two vacuum chambers which contain your desiccant. One chamber will be under vacuum conditions as part of the cooling process whilst the second is being regenerated by the use of high temperature air from a thermal oil unit. ( see sketch ). The valves for this are shown on the sketch as an indication only. To allow us to design the vacuum vessels we would ask that you let us have the following information. 1. Optimum temperature for regeneration. 2. Time required to bring the saturated desiccant back to dry condition. 3. Anticipated life of your product assuming no fluidisation takes place during the regeneration cycle. 4. Cost of the product based on volumes suitable for container transit. 5. Maximum acceptable velocity of the hot gases through the desiccant during the regeneration cycle. ( We assume the diameter of your material to be 3 mm.) 6.
